The Oakland Athletics are a Major League Baseball team based in Oakland,
California. They are in the Western Division of the American League. The
Athletics' name--originating in the term "Athletic Club" for local gentlemen's
clubs--dates back to 1860 when an amateur team.
This pet name "A's" has long been used interchangeably with "Athletics," meeting
to the team's early days when headline writers wanted a method to shorten the
name. In 2005, many pundits selected the Athletics to stop last as a result of
Beane's dismantling of the Big Three.
