Founded in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers to replace the disbanded Worcester
Worcesters in the National League, The Phillies played their first game on May
1, 1883. The Philadelphia Phillies are a Major League Baseball team based in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Phillies are currently the only major league franchise operating in
Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Athletics (now the Oakland Athletics) were once
the club's crosstown rivals in the first half of the 20th century. The Phils
would win the NL East in 1980. But in order to win the pennant, they would have
to go through the Astros. It would be a memorable NLCS as 4 of the 5 games went
into extra innings.
